Self custody

How to store DOG Rune safely.

If your DOG stays on an exchange, you hold an account balance. If DOG is in your own Bitcoin/Runes wallet, you hold the asset directly. The difference matters.

Holder basics

Your keys, your DOG.

This guide is intentionally conservative. It is education, not financial advice. The goal is to reduce custody confusion and make the holder verify every step.

Step 1Use a Bitcoin wallet that supports Runes.Do not send DOG to a wallet that cannot display or manage Bitcoin Runes.
Step 2Back up your seed phrase offline.Never type it into a website, chat, form or support ticket. Anyone with the seed owns the wallet.
Step 3Test with a small withdrawal.Send a small amount first, verify receipt, then move the rest only when you understand the flow.
Step 4Verify on chain.Use a Bitcoin explorer and Rune indexer to confirm the transaction and asset identity.
Why it matters

Exchange balances are not the same as self-custody.

DOG ARMY watches exchange wallets because a market can look liquid on screen while the on-chain reserves and withdrawal behavior tell a different story.

Risk

Withdrawals can freeze

If a venue pauses withdrawals, your account balance is trapped until that venue allows movement again.

Risk

Proof is external

You need on-chain evidence to know whether a venue's public wallets match the balances it implies.

Principle

Bitcoin was built for custody

The DOG thesis is aligned with holding your own keys and checking the chain yourself.
